He's currently watching his footballer buddies at the Olympics from the sidelines, but David Beckham is front and center as the cover boy of the September 2012 issue of British Esquire magazine.

Set to hit newsstands on Thursday (August 2), the 37-year-old Los Angeles Galaxy star looks ever-so-handsome in a checkered buttondown flannel with a white t-shirt and jeans for the Josh Olins shot front page while dishing about everything from his friendship with the royals to stripping down for the cameras.

Highlights from Mr Beckham's interview are as follows. For more, be sure to pay a visit to British Esquire!

On how he wants to be remembered:
"Just as a hard-working footballer. I want to be remembered firstly as a good and successful footballer because that’s what I’ve done for many years. And then who knows after that?"

On stripping down for photo shoots:
"It’s definitely got easier over the years, but when I was in New York, seeing a huge poster [of himself in a pair of briefs] on the side of a building, that was quite daunting. I remember driving past there, and stopping and running out and taking a picture, and this guy walked past me and he was like, 'Oh, my God! Have you seen your d**k up there?' Something disgusting like that. That was funny."

On his friendship with Prince William:
"It’s a very normal relationship. With Harry as well. They’re very easy to get along with. They love their sport. William loves Aston Villa, unfortunately, which obviously I give him a bit of stick about."

On being true to who he is:
"What you see, that’s me. And that won’t change. I might not walk around in just my underwear every day, but that’s the only thing [that is different about the private man]. I don’t try and hide anything. There’s nothing to hide."
