Olympic history was made today when U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps became the most decorated Olympian ever when he won the gold medal with his teammates in the men's 4x200-meter freestyle relay (July 31). The Americans' time was 6:59.70, more than three seconds faster than runner-up France. France earned silver in the relay, while China took the bronze.

On Sunday, the revered athlete tweeted, "There's nothing like being on a relay for #teamUSA !!" before joining teammates Conor Dwyer, Ryan Lochte, and Ricky Berens in today's race in London.

Overtaking Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina's 18 medal record, the 27-year-old had already set the record for gold medals. Phelps won six golds in Athens in 2004 and eight in Beijing in 2008.

Earlier today, in the 200 fly, Phelps finished .05 seconds behind South Africa's Chad le Clos to finish with the silver medal. Michael expressed disappointment and said, "Obviously I would have liked to have a batter outcome in the 200 fly. You know, I was on the receiving end of being touched out. Chad swam a great race. … It's obviously my last one, I would've liked to win, but 1:53 flat isn't a terrible time."

The record-holding swimmer says this will be his last Games, but has more two more events to add to his medal count in London, the 200 meter individual medley and 100-meter butterfly.
